| INTRODUCTION |
Maca
is the root of a Peruvian plant Lepidium meyenii (Brassicaceae),
growing in the Central Andean Region of Peru between
4000 and 4500 meters of altitude, mainly in Junin
and Cerro de Pasco. This species is described in the
catalogue of the flowering plants and gymnosperms of
Peru. Maca have been traditionally employed, among
others, to improve sexuality and fertility. Oral
administration of Maca significantly improved the
sexual behavior in male rats and mice. More
recently, it has been demonstrated that Maca
improves spermatogenesis in male rats.
Dry maca hypocotyls
have the following composition: 59% carbohydrates,
10.2% proteins, 8.5% fiber and 2.2% lipids among a
few other compounds (Dini et al. 1994).
Maca has a large
amount of essential amino acids and higher levels of
iron and calcium than the white potato. In addition,
it contains important amounts of fatty acids, of
which linoleic, palmitic and oleic acids are the
most prominent. Maca has a high mineral content, in
particular Fe, Ca and Cu. Alkaloids are also present.

HISTORY |
|
In early times (1600 b.C),
maca was appreciated not only as nutritious food, but
also as a gift of the gods along with corn and
potatoes. Mountain Raco in Junín was considered the
god of stewed food. In its honor, the natives buried
potatoes and maca there among other offerings. Maca
also was used in beverages with hallucinogenic
products in dances and religious ceremonies (Castro de
León 1990). Today in the local markets it is
advertised as an aphrodisiac, stamina-builder and
fertility-promoter. It is also often promoted as a
cure for rheumatism, respiratory ailments and as a
laxative. Dried maca roots are ground to power and
sold in drugstores in capsules as a medicine and food
supplement to increase stamina and fertility. Because
of these putative virtues, maca is also known by the
name of Peruvian ginseng (Rea 1992).

| Maca
- Nutritional Profile |
| Maca
has been used and venerated by native Peruvians for
being an excellent natural source of vitamins and
minerals. Living in the highlands is tough, oxygen
is scarce and the living conditions are difficult.
Maca has been their natural source of Iron needed
for the blood production and oxygen transportation
within the body, that’s why maca has been very
useful for the adaptation of the Incas to the high
altitudes.
The researches made
on Maca have demonstrated its huge amounts of
nutritive elements like a rich variety of minerals (iron,
sodium, calcium...), vitamins (B1, B2, E ...), amino
acids. Vitamins:
Maca has a rich
variety of vitamins in its composition; that's why
many people take it as a nutritive complement. Among
the vitamins found in maca, we have: vitamin B1, B2,
B, C, E ...
Thiamine -
B1 this vitamin convert blood sugar to energy
(co-enzyme) - very active people like sportsmen need
specially this vitamin for efficient nutrient
absorption from food. This vitamin will also help
you feel more active and have more energy for your
day to day living.
Riboflavin -
B2 Helps body release energy from protein/carbohydrates/fat,
and to cope better with stressful situations;
essential to life. Lack of HCl leads to inefficient
B2 absorption.
Minerals:
Iron is the
responsible of blood production and oxygen
transportation within the body, that’s why maca
has been very useful for the adaptation of the Incas
to the high altitudes where oxygen is scarce.
Potassium
Important to maintain the acid/alkaline balance
required for efficient cellular activity. Regulates
body's electrical activity (ie. heartbeat) and
carries nerve messages to muscles, releasing some
hormones and neurotransmitters en route.
Calcium Maca
has the higher concentration of this mineral than
other vegetal of his gender. Calcium is the most
abundant mineral in the human body, very important
to the teeth, bones and for the normal levels of
growing for children.

Peru working with MACA, assures that the treatment
with MACA on menopausal states is successful in
about 95% of cases. He has been working with maca
treatments for around 12 years and even in
hysterectomized women, where MACA has played a
powerful role improving menopausal symptoms and

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS:
I would
like to know if the product has sanitary authorization
and if it represents any health risk
?Actually the
product has been authorized by the Peruvian and Spanish
health organization authorities. It is
also registered with a sanitary code and has every
documentation and health trials in law. With
reference to the health risk you ask about, let me
inform you that there is no evidence of it on the
scientific studies made. The product is composed
by Maca´s root powder without any chemical agent
on it. Although there is no case of health risk up
to date, due to its high content of ferrum,
potassium and other minerals we do not recommend
it if you suffer of high blood pressure or heart
disease.
Is there any
side effect taking
maca ?All toxicity tests
and the consumption from a long time have proven
that maca is a safe root without any side effect
up to date.
Why
is maca known
to be better than viagra™ ?The impotence and
infertility problems affect both men and women.
While Viagra™ has been touted as the answer to
male impotence, there are many side effects
associated with its use. Moreover, for the most
part, Viagra™ has been ineffective in treating
sexual dysfunction in women. In the other hand
maca has proven (scientifically and by experience)
to be a completely natural way to achieve proper
sexual functioning without any side effects or
hazards to your health.
What is
Gelatinized Maca ?Gelatinized Maca is
absorbed more easily and can be better digested
than regular Maca powder because all the starch
has been removed as a result of the technology
developed by the National University of
Agriculture in La Molina, Peru.
Is maca a
safe plant ?Maca is considered
by people of the Andean region, where it is grown,
a safe tubercle and they have used it for
centuries ; from the Inca’s period. They
consumed maca as part of their daily alimentation.
There are no reports that Maca has any level of
toxicity.
How
much maca should I take?
Maca root is
considered food and therefore there is not a
maximum limit but it should not be taken in excess
as it happens with other foods. Nevertheless the
dose recomended is from 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Maca
powder daily and from 3 to 6 x 500mg Capsules.
Can I take
maca as a preventative way or
only to treat health problems ?Besides the well
known properties of Maca to improve the sexual
functions of humans and animals ; it is also used
preventively to help maintain the health of the
body as a revitalizer, energizer, restorative and
great physical and intellectual stabilizer. It is
also said that maca improves the memory and the
concentration, reduce stress and fatigue and
reinforces the immunological system.
How Does
MACA help to Balance Hormones In Men & Women?
Maca root is an
Adaptogen herb. This means the herb will work in
the body according to the needs, age and gender of
the person using maca. When women enter the
menopause period, they begin having symptoms
related to a change in hormone production such as
fatigue, night sweats, dizziness or palpitations.
Maca has been shown to promote the body's
production of the proper amounts of hormones to
maintain health and so to alleviate the menopausal
troubles. Even in men testosterone levels will
increase, sexual potency will be maintained
throughout a man's lifetime.
